Have you heard of The Code? The Code of Conduct for the Protection of Children from Sexual Exploitation in Travel and Tourism was created as a child protection tool to be used by the tourism industry to combat the sexual exploitation of children in travel and tourism activities. Fair Trade Tourism acknowledged City Lodge at the Tourism Indaba 2013 in Durban as being an example of best practice for rolling out the Code and providing staff training in all 52 of their hotels throughout South Africa.

By joining The Code, City Lodge is sending a clear message that we do not accept or tolerate this crime. City Lodge Hotels embraces the spirit of The Code and the identification of child sex tourism in the industry. In playing our part and taking an active role in getting the message out to as many people as possible, we have embarked on a roll-out of The Code to all 52 City Lodge group hotels around South Africa.

Clifford Ross, City Lodge group CEO:

Presentations and workshops were held at every hotel, during which the message of the Code and how everyone can assist in identifying signs that the practice of child sex tourism is taking place and what to do if this practice is evident in their establishment, was conveyed to staff.”

The travel and tourism industry has a responsibility

The sexual exploitation of children should not be a part of the tourism reality, but it is. Although tourism is not the cause of this crime, offenders take advantage of the services and infrastructure of the tourism industry to carry out the crime. The travel and tourism industry has a responsibility to combat the sexual exploitation of children at risk. Hence why City Lodge Hotels is taking action for child protection.

Operating in 46 countries, The Code encourages responsible, sustainable tourism by tourism companies based all around the world. By enacting responsible policies as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility, partners of The Code can play a vital role in protecting children from sexual exploitation in the industry and highlighting the fact that child sex exploitation is always unacceptable, no matter the country or context.

Support for The Code has been increasing in the South African tourism industry. Fair Trade Tourism is the local Code representative in South Africa. The organisation promotes equitable and sustainable tourism development in South Africa through a range of activities including awareness raising, capacity building, advocacy, and the facilitation of the world’s first Fair Trade tourism certification programme, based on global Fair Trade standards.

The Code in South Africa

As a champion of The Code initiative at City Lodge Hotels, Sheila Hair, a senior General Manager in the City Lodge group, conducted training throughout the country:

The City Lodge group of hotels is very proud to be doing its part in highlighting the Code and getting the message across that child sex tourism cannot be allowed in South Africa.”

The Code aims to help establish sustainable and ethical tourism that acknowledges and promotes the protection of children. Through the help of partners like City Lodge, The Code’s vision is well on its way to becoming a reality.

We believe that every company and business within the tourism industry can make a difference, and encourage others to sign up. Come take a stand with us right now: Join The Code
